How to remove stains from stainless steel

The name stainless steel might imply that it is easy to maintain and doesn’t stain. However, the reality is that the metal will not rust but it still requires regular cleaning to prevent staining.

While a refrigerator might require only minimal maintenance, the same can’t be said about dishwashers. If you forget to clean the surface with a stainless steel cleaner, it will cause all sort of stains on its surface. Don’t try to remove stains with an abrasive solution as it will most likely scratch the metal. If the stain can’t be removed with stainless steel cleaner, you will need melamine foam sponge.

You can purchase melamine foam sponges in almost any store. Brand names for melamine sponges are Magic eraser, Ultimate Sponge or other names. We used simple generic melamine foam sponges for our cleaning.

When cleaning your stainless steel appliances you want to first clean the surface with a damp sponge. Clean in the direction of grain using gentle pressure. After cleaning, wipe the area with a soapy towel and buff it dry with a towel. After cleaning it is a good idea to clean it once more with a stainless steel cleaner to give it a protective coat.
