About shag rugs

Why shag feels so good

Long strands, soft and deep.

A shag rug has long, loose strands of pile instead of short, tight ones. That’s what makes it so soft to sit on and so warm under bare feet.

You’ll often find one in a bedroom, or a family room where the kids play. Wool or synthetic, flokati included, it gets the same care, as long as the rug is safe to wash: that’s the first thing we check.

Common problems

Where the dirt goes

Down between the strands, to the base.

Every long strand gives crumbs, hair, dust and sand a place to hide. Bit by bit, they slip down and pack in at the base of the rug.

From above, the rug can still look fine. A vacuum picks up what sits near the top, but the grit lower down stays put.

  • Spills that soak in

An honest word

What a wash can do, and what it can’t

Good to know before you book.

A wash gets your shag rug clean. We wash it down to the base of the pile, rinse it and dry it fully before it comes home.

Long shag has a catch. Debris that’s packed hard at the base of long strands can’t all come out, at least not without spending more than the rug is worth. So we don’t promise every last grain.

If yours looks like that, we say so before we start, and you decide. We only suggest what your rug really needs.

Matting is another catch: washing cleans a matted shag rug, but it usually doesn’t lift the matting.

If you’re not sure about your rug, call (416) 939-7571 and ask. Each rug gets checked before the wash.

How we clean it

How we wash a shag rug

Only the steps your rug needs.

Shag rug cleaning starts with a close look: the pile, how it’s made, how much grit is packed in. Then we pick the steps it needs, and only those.

For some rugs, there’s a dusting step before any water: the rug turns in a tumbler to shake the grit loose, then an industrial vacuum draws it out. It’s an extra step, and we generally don’t use it on shag.

A super wash cleans both sides, so the rug is washed twice. It can help a thick rug. On a thinner one it generally makes no difference.

Extra care

Stains, smells and moths

Some shag rugs need more than a wash. Each extra is your choice, and only done if you agree.

Stain treatment

For spills that soaked into the long pile, after the regular wash.

Moth treatment

An extra for wool shag, done as the last step. It helps prevent future moth infestations.

Questions

Shag rug questions

The questions we’re asked most often, answered the way we would on the phone.

Can you get all the dirt out of a shag rug?

We wash it clean. With long shag, though, debris packed tight at the base of the pile can’t all be removed, at least not without spending more than the rug is worth. If yours is like that, we say so up front.

Does my shag rug need a super wash?

It might. A super wash means your rug is washed from both sides, so twice. That can help a thick shag rug. On a thinner rug it generally makes no difference, so we’d only suggest it if yours really needs it.

How do I look after a shag rug between washes?

Vacuum it often with the brush roll off, and now and then vacuum the back too. Blot spills right away with a clean white cloth instead of rubbing. Plan on our shag rug cleaning service about once a year. More rug care tips.

How much does shag rug cleaning cost in Toronto?

Cleaning is priced by the size of your rug. Stain treatment, enzyme odour treatment and repairs are extras, each one agreed with you first, so the price we give you is the price you pay. Pickup and delivery are free. Text us photos and the rug’s dimensions and we’ll send you an estimate.
